5 alternatives to the almighty iPhone 4S

Hindustan Times has a nice article on 5 alternatives to the almighty iPhone 4S. The iPhoneS 4S is available for Rs. 44,500 for the 16GB version and the 64GB version costs for Rs. 57,500. But personally I prefer that instead going for such costly Apple phones, its better to have the other alternatives which are quite cheaper and perform the same functionality as that of iPhone 4S.

The 5 alternatives to iPhone 4S are :
    1. Samsung Galaxy S II
    2. Samsung Galaxy Nexus
    3. HTC Sensation XE
    4. Motorola RAZR
    5. Nokia Lumia 800

How To Save Battery Power On Your Android Phone

Android phones have a tendency to drain your phone's battery power quickly. So here's a simple list of things you need to do to save your battery on your Android phone.

    • Check who consumes your phone's battery the most : Go to Settings -> About phone-> Battery use. This gives you all the details of your phone's battery power consumption, be it WiFi, GPS, display or any other application.
    • Use Battery Saver Apps : Use Juice Defender for saving your battery. Here's the description given on the site : JuiceDefender is a powerful yet easy to use power manager app specifically designed to extend the battery life of your Android device. Packed with smart functions, it automatically and transparently manages the most battery draining components, like 3G/4G connectivity and WiFi.
    • Reduce Display Brightness : Phone's display is one of the biggest power hog. Reduce it to a level which can be tolerated by your eyes and thus save your battery power to a substantial level. Go to Settings -> Display -> Brightness and reduce the level of brightness.
    • Use only 2G Networks : Unless you need access to high speed data provided by 3G, prefer using 2G networks as they consume less battery. Go to Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> Use only 2G networks.
    • Use Black Background : White or any other color background consume more battery. Use a black background to reduce the battery consumption.
    • Reduce Screen Timeout Duration : Go to Settings -> Sound & display -> Screen timeout and reduce to 30 seconds.
    • Other Turnoffs : Turnoff Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS when not needed.
    • Turn off Vibration : Turn off vibration to save power.

Why I Admire Narendra Modi ?

Atanu Dey has written a nice article on why Narendra Modi Scares Some People. Also his another article Modi will rescue India from its enemies is also a worth read.

I admire Narendra Modi for his zero tolerance against non sense stuff that other politicians indulge in. He is not in politics for money and hence does not tolerate corruption. In his blog post, Atanu talks about his conversation with an executive of a multinational firm. They wanted to set up their manufacturing operations in Karnataka but were faced with too many hurdles and it took them months. Even after they got approval for acquiring of land, the government was still troubling them in setting up their shop. So finally they decided to quit and check out Gujarat.

Once the CEO met Gujarat's Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Atanu writes, "Within four days – not months – they had acquired the clearances; within a couple of months, they had acquired the land; and even before their facilities were completed, rail and road connectivity was ready. The Gujarat government was serious about doing business in Gujarat and Shri Modi was the main driver of the state’s success."

Now this is the magic of Narendra Modi. He means business and wants that Gujarat should prosper, Gujarat's junta should prosper and not politicians. When someone wants to set up a shop, he wants that his government should provide him instant clearances. He should not be compelled to give money to some paisa-premi politician. And Narendra Modi is interested in not filling his pockets, but he wants that the aam-aadmi should prosper.

And this is the reason why some people in the politics hate him. Because he is a threat to their pocket filling mentality. They have a good reason to stay in politics (to fill up their vaults) and if Narendra Modi comes in, their game comes to an end.

The other thing I Narendra Modi is that he loves his country and country men. He does not have any other selfish interests and mostly he will always defend his country against all threats.

Dalit Ki Beti ya Daulat Ki Beti

Mayawati to inaugurate her dream park in Noida today. She calls herself Dalit ki Beti. Now we need to decide after watching this video that she is Dalit ki Beti ya Daulat ki Beti.
She spends public money in building such useless parks instead of creating more jobs for people.
6 crores to build a statue of Mayawati (she is only 4 feet tall) while you can have an elephant statue for just 70 lakhs.
So now you know why India is poor. Hard earned public money is being spent in such useless parks. God save India.

I have been using Ubuntu for more than 2 years from now and I am always satisfied by it. • No need to worry about viruses.

    • Everything that goes into its making is shared i.e., sharing of code. So efforts are shared worldwide, thus making it more dynamic.

Women Can Fight Diseases Well Compared To Men

So the mystery why women live longer compared to men is revealed. A research by Ghent University in Belgium has stated that women are genetically programmed in a better way to fight against diseases compared to men. And the answer lies in the extra X chomosome that women have.

The lead researcher, Dr Claude Libert said, "Statistics show that in humans, as with other mammals, females live longer than males and are more able to fight off shock episodes from sepsis, infection or trauma. We believe this is due to the Xchromosome, which in humans contains 10% of all microRNAs detected so far in the genetic code."

So this is good for women. But there is a down side too. According to Dr Eleanor Fish, a professor of immunobiology at the University of Toronto, if a woman has already been affected by any infection, then "it can result in a more severe inflammatory response. This means women are more likely to develop autoimmune diseases and they may suffer flu more badly than men."

So all women should take care they don't get any infection as far as possible.

    Update Facebook Status from Google+

Although Google+ is new in the Social Networking space and is miles behind Facebook, it has definitely started to make waves in the Social Networking space since its launch sometime back. Here's a way to update your Facebook status from Google+.

For this first you need to have your individual Facebook Mobile email address. You can get it from https://www.facebook.com/mobile/

Once you have your personal Facebook mobile email address, open your Google+ account and type in the status update. Now in the share with box, type the Facebook mobile email address and share the post. The status update will reflect on Facebook.

    Run Linux as a Software

If you want to try out Linux without creating another partition for it, then I would recommend you use Ubuntu. It is one of the most popular flavor of Linux. And the best part is, you can use it without giving it an extra partition.

All you have to do is to download a tiny tool called Wubi. This will help you to install Ubuntu within your current system. It is an officially supported Ubuntu Installer for Windows users. It'll download the necessary iso from the Internet and will install on your computer. Once the iso files are downloaded, all you have to do is provide a Username and Password for your Ubuntu and click Install.

Note that this may take some time as the file size is about 700MB. Once it is done, click Finish and reboot your computer. You'll see Ubuntu in the boot menu.

Post Status Updates Longer than 420 Characters

Facebook has a limit to which you can write characters in your status
update. One cannot write more than 420 characters as a status on
    Facebook. However, there's a trick.

Upload a photo (any photo) which you would like to accompany with your
    status update.

Once you upload a photo, you can write any amount of characters you want.

    Enjoy!

    Independence Day logo on Google

The default homepage in my Google Chrome is www.google.com and was happy to see the Google logo showing Red Fort in Delhi where the speech is delivered by the Prime Minister of India.

On clicking the logo it searches for "Independence Day India". Good to see this from Google.

Manipulate your Gmail address in different ways

I have been using various free email services for years. Started with Yahoo Mail and Hotmail and then finally the big daddy of free email services arrived from Google. Since then most of my email communication is done with Gmail. Although I have the Yahoo and Hotmail accounts still active, I check them just once a week. Using Gmail is far more advantageous compared to other services.

2 ways I like to use the Gmail address :

    • You can insert any number of dots in your address as Gmail discards the dots. So either you give your address as firstname.lastname@gmail.com or firstnamelastname@gmail.com or f.i.r.s.t.n.a.m.e.l.a.s.t.n.a.m.e@gmail.com - All of them end to the same address.
    • Also Gmail doesn't recognize any number of characters or numbers appended after a "+" sign at the end of your username. This helps in organizing emails. So if you are a college student and want that all the mails coming from your college should end up under a different label you created for you college mails, just provide your college the email id as FirstnameLastname+college@gmail.com. Create a filter that all mails coming under this email id should be labelled as "College". Similarly you can create for your bank account as FirstnameLastname+bank@gmail.com for all your bank correspondence.

    War of the Browsers

Most of the non-technical persons wouldn't know what a browser is, but still might be using it everyday for their day to day work, either emailing or chatting or "Facebooking" or "Orkutting". Even in my initial days of getting accustomed to internet I didn't knew what this browser meant. The only thing I knew that to connect to the internet, I need to click on an icon on the desktop which resembled "e". The icon was of Internet Explorer which I later came to know. And then came the browser wars, with browsers like Netscape getting popularity amongst the masses.

Presently browsers competing with one another are, Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox, Google's Chrome and Opera Software's Opera browser. Other small companies have also entered into this, however their share is limited.

    My Personal View :

I migrated from using IE to Mozilla's Firefox and then to Google Chrome. IE was and is buggy, takes ages to load and I somehow don't like it. Mozilla's Firefox is good and I still use it. But the only thing I dislike about it is that it takes more time to load compared to Google's Chrome. In my view, Google Chrome is much faster compared to Firefox. However, I still use both of them. Opera is good too, but haven't used it much as I am satisfied using Firefox and Chrome. Another browser that I have installed on my laptop is : Epic. It is the first-ever web browser for India. It is built by Hidden Reflex based in Bangalore and powered by Mozilla. It has about 1500+ Indian themes and wallpapers, too many apps for social networking and an integrated word processor too. And the best thing is that you can type in Indian languages, be it Gujarati, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, etc. Also all the 10,000 + Firefox plugins work with Epic. Way to go Epic.

    Gmail is the best

I have been using Gmail for over 6 years and have found that other email providers (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.), no matter how hard they try, they just can't beat Gmail. The features in Gmail can't match with any of the other free email providers.

Why do I use IE (Internet Explorer) ?

Just to download other browsers, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

    NS-2 Installation Issues

Why is the installation of NS-2 (Network Simulator) so troublesome and tedious? Trying to install it in my Ubuntu since past 2 days, but still it is causing some errors.

Avast seems to be better than AVG 2011

I have installed the free Avast Antivirus on my Windows 7 partition, whereas the Windows XP has the new free AVG 2011. I was using AVG (previous versions) till date on all my systems and OSes. But the latest version of the free AVG seems to be somewhat unstable. So removed it from my Windows 7 and installed Avast and since then I am quite happy with it. I am planning to install Avast on my Windows XP too.
