Manipulate your Gmail address in different ways

I have been using various free email services for years. Started with Yahoo Mail and Hotmail and then finally the big daddy of free email services arrived from Google. Since then most of my email communication is done with Gmail. Although I have the Yahoo and Hotmail accounts still active, I check them just once a week. Using Gmail is far more advantageous compared to other services.

2 ways I like to use the Gmail address :

  • You can insert any number of dots in your address as Gmail discards the dots. So either you give your address as firstname.lastname@gmail.com or firstnamelastname@gmail.com or f.i.r.s.t.n.a.m.e.l.a.s.t.n.a.m.e@gmail.com - All of them end to the same address.
  • Also Gmail doesn't recognize any number of characters or numbers appended after a "+" sign at the end of your username. This helps in organizing emails. So if you are a college student and want that all the mails coming from your college should end up under a different label you created for you college mails, just provide your college the email id as FirstnameLastname+college@gmail.com. Create a filter that all mails coming under this email id should be labelled as "College". Similarly you can create for your bank account as FirstnameLastname+bank@gmail.com for all your bank correspondence.
