To backup your SMS to your Gmail account, first you need to enable IMAP in your Gmail account.
Steps for enabling IMAP in Gmail :
Now install the application from Google Play on your Android Phone. Provide your Gmail credentials. Now it'll automatically backup your SMS, MMS and call logs in a separate label in Gmail account. You can also restore your backed up SMS, MMS and call logs to your phone.

After the first manual backup of whatsapp on gmail, is no longer the automatic backup of whatsapp ... Only update manually ...
Too bad, today is the only app that promised to make automatic backup of whatsapp as x traditional sms
